The term “super alphonso” can refer to two different things: the Indian Alphonso mango, a premium variety known for its rich, sweet, and creamy flesh, or the Super Alphonso mango variety, a newer American cultivar developed by Gary Zill that has a powerful Indian-style flavor but is not directly related to the Indian Alphonso.
The Indian Alphonso Mango
- Origin:Cultivated primarily along the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, India, in areas like Ratnagiri and Devgad.
- Characteristics:Considered the “King of Fruits,” it’s highly prized for its unmatched sweetness, smooth, fiber-free, creamy flesh, and intense aroma.
- Availability:It has a very short harvesting window, usually from March to June, which contributes to its high demand and cost.
The Super Alphonso Mango (Gary Zill’s Variety)
- Origin:Developed by Gary Zill in Florida, United States.
- Characteristics:It is a new variety that offers a strong, complex Indian-style flavor profile, described as floral, sweet, coconutty, and with a heavy citrus spice.
- Fruit Qualities:The fruits are larger than the original Indian Alphonso, with rich golden flesh that is fiber-free and buttery.
- Purpose:This variety was bred for its larger size, strong tree strength, and complex flavor to appeal to consumers.
